The Production Operative plays a crucial part in transforming bespoke design schematics into high-quality products. You will work closely with assembly engineers, technicians, and quality teams to build and test electronic control components and assist in the continuous improvement of manufacturing processes.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
Assembly Operations
- Assemble and wire control panels, IO modules, cable looms, and remote units accurately and in line with technical drawings.
- Perform hand soldering, component fitting, fastening, and enclosure assembly.
- Test sub‑assemblies and perform bench tests on control systems, including functional verification with electronic test rigs.
- Inspect visual displays, wiring continuity, and interface assemblies to ensure quality and safety.
- Maintain accurate work records (e.g., serial numbers, batch logs).
- Identify and report any nonconformities or equipment defects; assist with root‑cause analysis.
- Participate in 5S, housekeeping, and lean‑manufacturing initiatives.
- Support documentation updates and assist the technical documentation team as needed.

Quality/Continuous Improvement
- Ensure quality of product and materials from the designated area.
- Challenges poor performance and poor quality during the build process so that issues can be resolved pre-PDI.
- Contributes to continuous improvement initiatives and procedural development.
- Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the department and wider teams.
- Ensures that information gathered/reported is accurate and reflective of the unit’s operations.
- Assists with the integration and development of internal quality initiatives.
- Assists with the development of production standard operating procedures SOP’s and work instructions to facilitate internal training and development initiatives.
- Complete any special projects as required. May be assigned to other areas of Operations, based on business or customer requirements.
Background and Experience
- Proven experience in manufacturing, electronics assembly, or production operations.
- Knowledge of wiring looms, soldering, and reading engineering drawings.
- Basic electrical/electronic understanding—training on CAN systems and control panels preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and quality focus.
- Good manual dexterity and competence using assembly tools and test equipment.
- Comfortable working in small teams and independently.
- Effective communication skills and willingness to learn.
- Ability to handle shifting priorities in a bespoke, high‑mix environment.
- Basic IT skills (e.g., MS Office for log and record keeping).
Desirable
- NVQ or level‑equivalence in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Manufacturing.
- Experience with CAN bus diagnostics or similar system bench testing.
- Exposure to bespoke control systems or industrial machinery assembly.
